Writing Exercises

Are you running out of writing exercise ideas? You've come to the right blog.
I believe, writing - or any other art form - takes practice. Some of us write morning pages, some keep diaries, some write a hundred drafts, others "keep in shape" with writing exercises.
Personally, I prefer writing exercises and am always looking for new ideas. Surely - I assume - I can't be the only writer out there, searching for fresh stimulation. That is why I designed this blog, to share my "starters" with you.
So, plant your butt on a chair and start writing. Better yet sign up and receive my new writing exercise postings via email.

Summer Solstice

Even though, it was just June 24, the "longest day", you might remember a day in your life that seemed the longest in a different way:

- emotionally
- physically
- mentally

Write about it for ten minutes without stopping.

Awake childhood memories with one of the following sentence starters:

Metaphors/Similes

Here's a brain teaser: compare and find metaphors or similes:
- woman's wrinkled face
- old house
- rusty truck
- overripe banana
- sick tree
- broken computer
- dull scissors
- cracked chimney
- smeared lips
- shaggy carpet
shipwrecked sailboat
- ripped tent
Write quickly, the first metaphor or simile that comes to mind.

From here to there

It is not always easy to get characters from "here" to "there". For an exercise, try one of the following, describing the action using at least three senses.
- Peter: from the bed into the shower
- Mary: from the cellar into the attic
- Dad: from the carport to the office
- Suzie: from the house to the school bus
- John: from the classroom to the principal's office
- Mom: from the laundry room into the garden
- Group of kids: from the campground to the water slides
- Dog: from the back alley into the kitchen
Write, without stopping, for ten minutes.
